Paceman King is a big hit down under

Matt King. Matt King.

BASINGSTOKE and North Hants cricketer Matt King has shown genuine pace during his winter playing club cricket in Australia.

The Hampshire Academy star, right, who was the Southern Electric Premier League Young Cricketer of the Year for 2012, has been playing grade cricket in Perth for Subiaco-Floreat.

Subiaco president Glyn O’Brien said: “Matt has been playing for the colts team and also in the second and third grades and has been coaching some of the junior players.

“He’s bowled well, mainly playing two-day games, and has bowled with genuine pace.

He added: “His enthusiasm and willingness to help the younger guys has made him a very popular addition to our team.

“We couldn’t really ask any more of him and I’m sure he’s learned a lot that he will take back to Hampshire with him.

“He’s a fine young man and he’s got a big future in the game if he keeps progressing.”

Basingstoke-born King, who turns 19 next month, was the Academy’s leading wicket-taker in the 2012 in the Southern League and claimed 25 victims at 22.04 with a best haul of 6-34.
