Speedster Evans looking to improve in 2013
12:00pm Saturday 26th January 2013 in Sport
HATCH Warren single seater driver Gareth Evans is gearing up for his second season in 750 Motor Club Formula Vee Championships and will return to the track on March 23 at Donington Park.
Last season, Evans excelled in his first ever season racing as he won the Class B Rookie of the Year trophy.
He finished 12th overall and second in Class B thanks to class wins at Brands Hatch and Anglesey. He missed the podium just once all season in Class B, coming fourth at Donington following mechanical issues with his Scarab Mark 2 racing car.
Evans is following in the footsteps of some very famous racing drivers who started their careers in Formula Vee including F1 World Champions Niki Lauda and Emerson Fittipaldi.
Looking back on his first season, Evans, who reviews cars for car websites, said: “It was an absolute dream as I think it is for any young boy to race cars.
“I spoke to Andy Storer who has been a great help to me and he sold Formula Vee to me.
“This is grassroots racing on a budget, but I am still looking sponsors. “Last year went a lot better than I ever expected and at Anglesey I won both races, picked up two fastest laps and two pole positions so it could not have gone any better.”
He has a clear aim for the coming season and said: “I want to win the overall Class B crown and finish in the top 10 overall.”
After the opening race at Donington Park, the championship then travels to Brands Hatch, Snetterton, Pembrey, Rockingham, Silverstone, before returning to Donington for races on the national circuit.
Evans said: “I have never raced at Snetterton, Pembrey or Rockingham which I am looking forward to and I really like the Donington Park track even if the place has not been kind to me.”
