READING matchwinner Adam Le Fondre believes that Saturday’s 2-1 victory over Newcastle United can be a springboard to more wins away from the Madejski Stadium.

The victory at St James’ Park was Reading’s first on the road this season and Le Fondre, who scored both of his side’s goals after coming on as a substitute, is hoping more will follow.

“I think this can be a massive springboard for us,” he said. “Obviously we’ve done really well at home since Boxing Day and now we are transferring it to away games.

“It just shows the character and togetherness we have got in the camp. If we keep that and keep going the way we’re going, I don’t think we’ll have any problems come the end of the season.”

Reading manager Brian McDermott also praised the spirit shown by his side, who came from behind to win for a third game running.

“We’ve got great spirit here and desire and not just that, we’ve got quality and we’ve got players who can create things,” he said. “Sometimes we do ourselves a disservice, we don’t play with the ball as well as we might do, but the goals today I thought were fabulous for us.”

McDermott was also quick to praise the 1,000 Royals fans who braved the freezing conditions to make the long trip north to Newcastle.

“Newcastle get a goal and it’s never easy when they get one up here, with the fans they’ve got,” he added. “I have to say we had such great support ourselves though.

“I was really surprised our fans managed to get here today with the weather conditions so we’re delighted really.”
