TOTALLY Tennis Performance player Matthew Berry won the boys’ singles title at the Thornden Match play event held at Thornden School in Chandler’s Ford.

Berry only needed two wins to secure the overall win in the 14 and under singles, Grade 6 event, beating Joshua Overton 4-1, 4-1 and Leon Chatterton 4-1, 4-0 convincingly to take the silverware.

Mini Performance player Eliza Wheeler was third in the nine-and-under girls’ singles at the High Wycombe Winter Regional Tournament held at the Bucks Indoor Tennis Centre in High Wycombe.

In the Group stages, Wheeler was runner-up in Group A after beating Lillie Warren-Cafferty 7-4, 7-3 and losing to group winner Alicia Dudeney in a tough three-set match 7-5, 5-7, 7-3. Dudeney and Wheeler both progressed to the main draw.

In the quarter-finals, Wheeler played really well to defeat Rina Hayamizu in another three-set contest 7-1, 5-7, 7-2. In the semi-finals, Wheeler lost to event winner Isabelle Eaton 7-4, 7-3. She then won the third and fourth play-off match, revenging her earlier group defeat against Dudeney 7-5, 7-3 to finish in third place overall.

Head coach Danny Fowkes, who coaches Berry and Wheeler, said: “Matthew did really well in his matches in his first event in the higher age group, which will give him confidence in future events.

“Eliza had some tough three-set matches where she played very well, progressing through to the main draw. She was unlucky to meet the eventual winner in the semis but played well to finish a respectable third overall.”
