BASINGSTOKE Blizzards basketball team have really hit form in recent weeks with four straight wins to moving them into third place in the Wessex League Division Two table, writes Marcel Mavronicholas.

Their latest victories came against the Woodley Amigos 71-65 and Woking Blackhawks 79-62.

Last Sunday, away at Woodley, the Blizzards were quick out of the blocks to take a 10-0 lead after just four minutes.

The home side hit back to level things up, but Basingstoke reached the end of the first quarter ahead 21-14.

Woodley quickly closed the gap to 23-20, but a good defence and three pointers from Gavin Frecklington and Rob Gerrard helped Basingstoke lead 35-29 at half-time.

After the break, good teamwork saw the Blizzards create numerous turnovers to pull clear 43-33 and with Frecklington still shooting threes the score moved on to 65-49.

Gerrard was then forced out due to an injured ankle and the visitors lost momentum but still won 71-65.

The week before against visiting Woking, Basingstoke led 12-9 at the end of the first quarter with Aaron Taylorson scoring 10 of their points.

In the second quarter visiting Woking struck back to lead 19-16, but after a time out the home side scored 15 points while conceding just two in the space of three minutes to take a 31-21 lead. After the break, Gerrard scored a massive 31 points as the Blizzards cruised to a 79-62 victory.

The Blizzards’ next match is at Queen Mary’s College on Tuesday night against Aztec Jaguars (tip off 8.25pm).
