Cannon bounce on Springs

3:42pm Wednesday 28th November 2001

After last week's draw manager Jamie Marlow predicted that, at some point, The Cannon's opponents would get a hammering in front of goal.

It happened against Springfield on Saturday, when the visitors were hit for six. It could have been more.

The Cannon started the game with four players missing. Springfield started well, with a chance in the first 30 seconds, but Cannon's keeper Lee Chandler saved well

The rest of the game belonged to The Cannon, who went 1-0 up when forward Paul Green latched onto a pass by Peter Digweed, and blasted it past the helpless keeper.

Then The Cannon made it 2-0, when Dean Shuttleworth chipped the ball through to Paul Green, who calmly put it in the net for his second of the game.

Peter Digweed had to come off due to a shin injury, and was replaced by James Pettitt. Chances fell to the Cannon players, but they could not find the back of the net.

At the start of the second half The Cannon slowed down, and nearly got caught out. But the back four, led by Rob Green, held strong and any Springfield attack was dealt with ease.

Dean Shuttleworth, on the counter attack, had a shot saved, but the re-bound fell to Aaron Murphy, who put it in for 3-0.

From this moment on, The Cannon stepped up a gear and Springfield had no answer for their attacking game.

Chris 'Clive' Francis took a free-kick from 25yards out, which the keeper dropped, and once again Aaron Murphy put the rebound in for 4-0 and his second of the game.

Dean Shuttleworth made it 5-0 with a well taken goal which he desevered. Man of the match Paul Green then made it 6-0 with his third of the game and his first Cannon hat-trick.

Manager Jamie Marlow said after the game: "We played well in all areas of the pitch and it could have been more. I am pleased with our passing and finishing. It was a great team performance and we will build on this."
