A PASSENGER suffered life-threatening injuries in a serious crash on the A303 near Andover this evening (Friday).

A Citroen C1 and a Ford Focus collided on the eastbound carriageway at around 4.40pm, causing one car to overturn.

The passenger of the Citroen was taken to Southampton General Hospital with life-threatening injuries.

The driver was taken to Salisbury District Hospital with less serious injuries.

Paramedics treated two more patients at the scene.

The road was shut in both directions between the A343 Salisbury Road and A3057 while emergency services dealt with the incident.

A spokesman for Hampshire Police said: "We would like to appeal to motorists who were travelling on the A303 this evening just before 5pm who may have seen what happened.

"We are particularly keen to speak to anyone who may have captured dash cam footage."

The Thames Valley Air Ambulance attended the incident, while the Hampshire Air Ambulance team also attended in an ambulance car.

Three other ambulance crews were at the scene, plus the hazardous area response team, and an ambulance officer.

A witness told this newspaper: "It's carnage out there, I think there are several vehicles involved.

"The police are redirecting traffic around Andover, the impact is huge as it's rush hour on a Friday.

"The road's at a standstill, there's miles of tailbacks."

South Central Ambulance Service could not provide the genders or ages of the patients.

The road was expected to cleared by 8.30pm.
