PEDESTRIANS and cyclists are set to benefit from improved access in Basingstoke – thanks to a £4.35million investment.

The Enterprise M3 local enterprise partnership has committed the money for Sustainable Transport Schemes in 2015-16 across Hampshire and Surrey.

Basingstoke is one of 11 areas where the cash will be used to fund projects to improve accessibility.

Applications for the funding had to demonstrate that the scheme would deliver measurable benefits to improve economic development in the region as well as significant environmental benefits.

The investment from Enterprise M3 in 11 schemes will unlock a further £9.043 million of matched funding to ensure the successful completion of these projects.

In Basingstoke, the proposal consists of a package of sustainable measures to improve pedestrian, cycling and accessibility in the town.

The schemes are expected to deliver longterm environmental benefits, encourage greater take up of cycling through the expansion, and development of dedicated cycling routes and improve pedestrian access.

Geoff French, chair of Enterprise M3 Local Enterprise Partnership, said: “The ability of sustainable and environmental transport schemes to unlock economic growth and development is too often overlooked. Investing in sustainable transport schemes, such as pedestrian walkways and cycle routes that can help reduce the economic cost of congestion is extremely valuable in Surrey and Hampshire.

“Giving commuters access to Wi-Fi on public transport provides a significant benefit, enabling them to work and access vital information on the move.

“Investment in these schemes reinforces our commitment, as a LEP, to further developing the region’s vital infrastructure which, in turn, will help support even more economic growth.”
