DID you know that this weekend will be exactly 50 days after Easter? Probably not – and it might not matter much if no one asks you, but that 50 days marks another important festival for Christians.

It’s the day when we celebrate the gift of the Holy Spirit to the disciples who after Jesus’ resurrection were still waiting in Jerusalem.

The Spirit is not a ghost – it is the way people recognise God’s presence with us now, the way we know that God is not just stuck up beyond the sky somewhere or in a story in the past, but is part of our world now.

We believe that it is through the Holy Spirit that God can encourage us, strengthen us and bring us peace and comfort now, today, whenever we need that. Or give us the strength and the words to meet a challenge in our lives...and a whole lot more.

One of the gifts of God’s Spirit is bringing people together into community: a community that shows love, joy peace, patience, kindness and generosity. A God-given gift worth celebrating – and asking for.

Come, Holy Spirit. Try praying this – and be prepared to expect the unexpected.
