THE Mayor of Winchester continued a sporting tradition last weekend.

Cllr Frank Pearson delivered the first wood at the opening of Riverside Indoor Bowling Club’s new season on Saturday (Sept 29).

He followed in the footsteps of former mayor Norman Hibdige who did the honours at the official opening of the club in 1997.

New club president Sylvia Mould welcomed more than 120 members and guests to the club in Gordon Road, with many enjoying free coaching sessions.

Mrs Mould said: “All standards of players are welcomed at the club, from new bowlers, for whom coaching is available, to the more experienced – or to those wishing to return to the sport.”

The club can cater to all levels of bowling from friendly matches to national competitions and also hosts social events.
