Twyford to get super-fast broadband
SUPER-fast broadband is finally coming to Twyford.
Residents will benefit from a nationwide £2.5 billion investment by BT, which will connect them to a high-speed fibre broadband network already enjoyed in places like Winchester.
The news was welcomed by MP Steve Brine, who said: “I have been in contact with a number of Twyford constituents in the past two years who, quite rightly, were demanding a better service from BT and access to the kind of broadband speeds people just three miles up the road in the city have enjoyed for years.”
However, Mr Brine urged BT to begin work as soon as possible, and to “not let this drag on any further”.
Other Hampshire communities to benefit include Hayling Island, Petersfield and Rownhams. The news was also welcomed by Hampshire County Council leader, Ken Thornber, who said: “This technology will be of great benefit to the increasing number of households and businesses in these areas who use the internet for work, shopping, entertainment and leisure.”
In Hampshire it is estimated that 80 per cent of households and business premises will have access to faster broadband by 2015 through the commercial market, but the council’s Hampshire Broadband Programme will intervene in rural areas where further investment is needed.
BT said a total of 33,000 premises in seven locations are set for the fibre upgrade, with more than 400,000 already able to access the service across Winchester, Eastleigh, Southampton and Portsmouth.
