Winchester Action on Climate Change is announcing its first-ever patron at its AGM next week.
Professor Joy Carter, Vice-Chancellor of the University of Winchester, has agreed to take on the role and will be unveiled at the meeting on Saturday, October 6.
Professor Carter, who has a background in environmental geochemistry, said: “WinACC is a professional, well managed organisation which is working tirelessly in an area of huge importance to human kind. “It inspires and facilitates organisations and citizens in Winchester and District to work together creatively to accelerate the move to a low carbon society.”
Chris Holloway, WinACC director, added: “Having the support of an important local figure in Professor Joy Carter will help us raise awareness of climate change, probably the biggest challenge humanity has ever faced.” The group was formed in 2007 with the aim of cutting Winchester's annual carbon footprint by 30 per cent between 2004 and 2015.
Winchester University is one of the founding members of WinACC and has given the group use of office space on campus.
The AGM takes place in St Lawrence Parish Room in Colebrook Street at 10.30am.
