Hampshire midwife becomes doctor after studying for seven years alongside day job.
AS CAREERS go, midwifery is challenging enough. But a midwife from Fair Oak can now add doctor to her name following seven years of study alongside her day job.
Cindy Shawley, 51, community midwifery team manager at Hampshire Hospitals NHS Foundation Trust (HHFT), said: “It has taken seven years but all the hard work has been worth it. My thanks go to my family and colleagues, without them I'd never have done it.”
On Friday, July 20, Cindy was presented with a Doctorate in Clinical Practice from the University of Southampton. Cindy has worked in Hampshire as a midwife since 1984, including time as a senior community midwife in Eastleigh and as manager of Andover Birth Centre, before taking up her current role. She is also a midwifery lecturer at the University of Southampton and will continue in her current role with HHFT. Mary Edwards, chief executive at HHFT said: “This is a tremendous achievement for Cindy. We are proud of her and all our staff who continue to develop themselves professionally. It's a huge achievement to have completed study at this high level while also working full-time in a demanding job.”
