THE Chronicle by and large thinks that elected councillors of all parties do a decent and tough job, trying to balance conflicting demands and pressures. They are criticised by many, and subject to often ridiculous criticism from keyboard warriors.

But what on earth are the city councillors playing at over the diversion of Andover Road? Permission was granted several years ago to divert the main road through the Barton Farm/Kings Barton estate. The proposal by CALA Homes garnered broad cross-party support at a time when the council was controlled by the Conservatives. It still is controlled by the Conservatives.

The question is why has there been this switch which can only be described as bizarre. The obvious answer is that elections are looming and ones in which the Tories and Lib Dems are vying neck and neck. Both are trying to maximise support.

Campaigner Paul Twelftree can be absolved from any criticism because he has been consistent in his stance on Andover Road for several years.

Of course councillors have the right to change their minds over an issue but surely not when a decision has been made years ago and plans proceeded accordingly.

Nothing materially has changed for the councillors other than the residents of Weeke, Harestock, Littleton and villages such as South Wonston are going to the polls.
