LOCKED doors will soon be opening across Winchester as part of Heritage Open Weekend.

Winchester will play a leading role between September 7-10 when the public will be able to step inside some of the city's most iconic and historic buildings.

With over 70 events taking place people will be able to discover the hidden stories and historical secrets that have formed part of Winchester’s rich history.

Amongst the attractions there will be a rare opportunity to see Winchester College's medieval rooms which house the school's archives and the Fellows' Library, War Cloister and Science Collections.

You can visit St Swithun-upon-Kingsgate church, a hidden gem that not many people know about, and Pilgrims' Hall where Austen Abridged, an Antiques Valuation evening and The Tree Line Poetry readings will all take place.

There will be also an encaustic tile display and you get your hands dirty making your own tiles at Hyde900’s workshop.

During the festival you can even sample a flavour of history with cider tasting at The Stable or by joining a walking tour of Winchester’s historic sites and best real ale pubs.

Further afield, Hursley House is opening the doors of the Grade II* listed mansion. Special tours will reveal the fascinating history of the Hursley estate and its occupants.

You can also visit the Museum which traces the story of IBM and the technological innovations which have been conceived there.

Winchester Heritage Open Days is supported by Winchester BID and Winchester College and follows the National Heritage Open Day’s theme of celebrating "All Our Stories”.

All the events are free, but you’ll need to pre-book in some places. You can also ride about the city free on the popular vintage buses.
