A WINCHESTER councillor has described a city estate as a "dreadful place" as she pressed council chiefs to hurry up and improve it.

City councillor Eileen Berry says she is concerned that not enough is being done to improve Trussell Crescent in Weeke.

As reported in the Chronicle the area is set for a £110,000 revamp. A further £40,000 could be spent on parking improvements, but a decision on this was deferred at a previous meeting.

Cllr Berry fears the building programme won't go ahead due to residents complaints, and called for work to start.

She also said that the area is a "dreadful place".

However a leading council officer said work to improve the area is already under way, but was delayed due to bad weather conditions.

Cllr Berry said: "I was at Trussell Crescent this morning and for three quarters of an hour I had my ears blown off with complaint after complaint from one particular resident.

"I know this resident is a thorn in alot of peoples side, I know a building programme has been stopped in Trussell Crescent, parts of the programme were good, what is happening now?

"I have a dreadful feeling that it is going to be left because of a few people, I am aware that it is a dreadful place and not getting any better my question to you is where are you going with this what are you going to do I want to know something is going to happen."

Chief housing officer at Winchester City Council, Richard Botham answered: "We did discuss a report about significant investment to Trussell Crescent, those improvements are under way.

"We had concerns from residents about delays, but alot of that related to weather conditions, that was an operational thing."

The meeting heard the council still intends to put fencing in Trussell Crescent as part of the improvements.
