CRAFTSMEN from around the UK will visit Winchester Cathedral for the first Stonemasons Festival on July 8-9.

The cathedral hopes it could become an annual event celebrating the people who follow the centuries-old skills of working in stone.

On Friday 8 and Saturday 9 July, between 10am and 4pm the masons will be taking part in a carving competition, working publicly in the Cathedral Inner Close.

Visitors can watch them at work, find out about stonemasonry, have a go at carving and enjoy a festival atmosphere.

On Sunday July 10 the finished works will be on display, there will be an opportunity to meet the masons and, in the afternoon, take part in a public auction of all their work.

Admission is free and no booking is required.
