NO ifs not buts no Sure Start cuts.

Those were the chants of angry protesters who are battling a plan to cut children’s centres across Hampshire.

Nearly one hundred people gathered outside Hampshire County Council’s main offices in Winchester in a mass protest against Sure Start Cuts.

They then marched through the heart of Winchester, from the council offices to King Alfred's statue in The Broadway.

People watched on as they made themselves heard by chanting and waving placards.

Hampshire Chronicle:

Campaigner Catherine Ovenden led the march through Winchester after making a deputation to council chiefs in a bid to persuade them to scrap the cuts.

The restructure would see 43 children’s centres closed across the county, leaving 11 regional hubs.

The protesters made themselves heard by chanting “no sure start cuts” and “no ifs, no buts, no Sure Start cuts” one protester could be seen rallying others by banging a drum, another used a megaphone, however not everyone was happy with the noise.

The protest generally smoothly but it did block traffic on Upper High Street and some residents could be seen complaining to a PCSO about the noise and disruption outside the council offices.

At one point a police community support officer was hit by a car by a motorist, the Chronicle is trying to get more details of this incident which happened at The Broadway.
