FIREFIGHTERS were called to deal with a blaze at a prison, within hours of two prisoners causing a disturbance.
The fire broke out at in a cell at HMP Winchester this afternoon just after 2pm.
By the time firefighters from Winchester Fire Station and Eastleigh Fire Station arrived the blaze was already out.
In a separate and unrelated incident, a disturbance happened when two prisoners climbed onto internal netting.
A spokesman for Winchester Fire Station said: “It was a fire in a cell, all we did was blow out the smoke as the fire was already out when we got there.”
A fire engine from Winchester and a land rover and fire engine from Eastleigh were called to the incident at 2:10pm, the stop call was at 2:30pm.
A spokesperson for the Ministry of Justice said: “Staff at HMP Winchester put out a minor cell fire started by a prisoner at about 2pm on Tuesday 3rd May.
“The incident will be reported to the police and the fire service attended as a precaution.
“In an unrelated incident two prisoners climbed onto internal netting but came down voluntarily. The prison has started disciplinary proceedings against them.”
A spokesperson for South Central Ambulance Service said they were due to be called to the prison, but were stood down as no-one was injured in either incident.
