A NEW series of papers on local history is to be launched in Winchester on October 8.

Dr Simon Sandall, lecturer at the University of Winchester, is the editor of the Hampshire Papers.

He is currently preparing to launch the second series of the papers on the local connections of Florence Nightingale, Dr Joseph Stevens of St. Mary Bourne and Japanese nurses in Hampshire in the First World War.

The series will be launched in the chapel at the Royal Hampshire County Hospital in Winchester.

It is an apt setting as the publications all have a medical theme and Nightingale helped design the hospital which opened in 1868. She lived at Embley Park near Romsey.
