A CHUNK of a 40ft tree came crashing down close to a Winchester leisure centre this afternoon.
The chestnut tree in River Park came down in Gordon Road just outside River Park Leisure Centre.
Debris from the tree blocked off the pavement on Gordon Road and covered two thirds of the road.
One person who saw the aftermath of the incident was Ian Henderson from Badger Farm, who had been working out at the gym in the leisure centre.
Mr Henderson, said: “I did not see it fall but a man at the leisure centre said there was quite a bang when it went down.
“It would have definitely have killed someone if it had hit them.”
A tree surgeon at Worthy Tree Care, said: “It was right across the whole road blocking it, you could just get about one car through it.
“It is one of those things, it can happen anytime anywhere, it could because of a cross wind that weight or because of anything, who knows.”
He added that there is about one and a half tonnes of debris, which will take around three hours to clear. The incident happened at 2pm.
The Chronicle has approached River Park Leisure Centre for comment.
