A YOUTH group is planning an activities day thanks to a cash boost from the city council.

Winchester Friends of the Family, which runs a fives to 13s project, has received £400 from the council's small grants scheme.

It means the charity can take 13 youngsters to Calshot Activities Centre where they will be able to take part in team orienteering, ringos and the giant swing.

Project leader Sam Hunt and a team of five volunteer befriends will accompany them as they try new experiences and gain self confidence.

Chairman Vivienne Wheeler said: "Friends of the Family having been very fortunate in procuring this grant from Winchester City Council which will enable us to provide a fun, educational and stimulating summer outing for the children we support in our fives to 13s Project. We greatly appreciate the grant allowing our children to enjoy an adventurous time at Calshot Activity Centre."

Cllr James Byrnes, portfolio holder for local economy, said: "We are delighted to support Friends of the Family through this award. Their imaginative work shows how a small grant can make a real difference to the lives of vulnerable children and their families."
