AN OUTREACH scheme which uses football to keep Winchester teenagers off the street has won a funding boost from Hampshire’s police chief.

The Friday Football Project, offering at-risk boys aged 11 to 19 the chance to have a kickabout and steer clear of alcohol abuse, has won a £2,920 grant from police and crime commissioner Simon Hayes.

Around 25 boys use pitches at Henry Beaufort School every week to let off steam, chat to youth workers and grow up away from the temptation of Friday nights in Weeke and Harestock.

They just have to bring their boots with a £1 donation and the team, from Winchester Street Reach, put on games which allow them to mix with other age groups and learn respect through sportsmanship.

Project manager Ben Martin said: “There is no youth club provision in Weeke and Harestock and the young people we encounter are disengaged and often lead risky lifestyles.

“The fact it was their idea and we help them realise it is part of why it’s so successful – everyone’s heard of Friday Football. It’s got a grassroots, community feel to it.”

Mr Hayes said: “Giving people a chance to improve their own wellbeing through early intervention is much more cost-effective than dealing with more serious issues once people become involved in criminal behaviour.”
