FIREFIGHTERS were twice called to Winchester Prison in the early hours of this morning.

The first was at 1.38am after a fire broke out in a cell. One person was removed by prison guards and another was rescued by Winchester firefighters.

Just over an hour later, at 3.05am, they were called to another fire in a cell, in a separate wing.

The cause of both incidents is unknown.

Three people were taken to Royal Hampshire County Hospital.
