A SCHOOL is celebrating the official opening of their £1.2 million maths block.

Perins School, in Alresford, opened the new building on Wednesday (July 16) at a special ceremony including tours of the eight classrooms.

It will be used as a maths block, relieving pressure on existing classes and enabling the school to accept extra Year 7 students in September.

Hampshire Chronicle:

School business manager Clive Surry said: “The number of students at Perins is increasing year on year and classroom space is at a premium. This new block allows us to re-house the maths department, vacate the 'temporary' mobile classrooms that are at the end of their life-span and give the English department more space in the existing block, helping to raise standards across the school.”

Headteacher Janice Bernard said: “The new maths block will help us to achieve our ambition to be one of the highest-performing schools in the country.”

The build was funded by the Academies Capital Maintenance Fund after it was approved by the Education Funding Agency.

It was named 'Turing' after the mathematician and World War II code-breaker Alan Turing, and features the latest technology in energy efficiency.
