A NEW superfast broadband programme promises to be rolled out in parts of Winchester over the next six months.

The Hampshire Superfast Broadband Programme aims to extend its coverage so at least 95 per cent of premises in Hampshire can access the best available technology by the end of 2018.

It is hoped the new scheme will boost some 900 houses’ internet connection by allowing a speed of 24 megabits per second.

New equipment will be installed in Winchester, Kings Worthy, Abbots Worthy, South Wonston and Colden Common between July and December 2014.

Cllr Robert Humby, Leader of Winchester City Council and Hampshire County Councillor for Bishop’s Waltham, said: “Winchester City Council supports this programme as superfast broadband is crucial to the vitality of our smaller rural communities.

“It will enable residents to do more on-line and faster than ever before - streaming films, TV and music in seconds and enjoy seamless working from home. For local businesses it will open up new business ventures and opportunities that the global on-line market has to offer.”

The Government has allocated £9.2 million to Hampshire which has been match-funded by Hampshire County Council.

Cllr Roy Perry, Leader of Hampshire County Council, said: “The roll-out of superfast broadband is a high priority for Hampshire County Council and I expect at least 95 per cent of homes and businesses in Hampshire will be able to access services by 2017. This next phase of the roll-out will help tackle social isolation in some of the most rural parts of Winchester and has potential to grow the City’s economy, providing more jobs and opportunities.”

Though some homes and businesses might be located too far to benefit directly from superfast speeds it is hope there will be some improvements to their existing service once the scheme is introduced.
