RESIDENTS in Colden Common have been sowing seeds aplenty in time to mark the anniversary of World War One.

Volunteers from around the village came together to sow poppies seeds in time to commemorate the war at the sensory garden – an area specifically designed to mark the occasion.

The small brick-walled area is now surrounded by brightly-coloured red poppies, of all different shapes and sizes, as are a number of other locations across the village.

Maureen Rees, one of the organisers, said: “The Community Association made a decision at the December Forum to plant sew poppies as part of our WW1 commemoration. We applied for a grant from Hampshire County Council to purchase seeds and to put on an exhibition, which will take place from August 4-9.

“The gardening club, Rainbow Guides, Brownies, Methodist church members, ladies group representatives, the WI and a member from the Greening Colden Common group all took part, as well as individuals and community centre volunteers and staff.

“Steve, the parish council grounds technician, dug gorse, brambles and weeds out of the raised beds on the green to enable the Rainbow Guides and Brownies to sew their seeds.”
