TALENTED children from across the UK have been awarded at this year’s Young Writers’ Poetry Competition.
A special ceremony was held on Saturday (June 28) to celebrate children’s achievements from a number of Hampshire schools as part of this year’s 34th Winchester Writers’ Festival.
Entrants were asked to write food-themed poems in a bid to encourage children to challenge the written word.
Judith Heneghan is the festival director and the University of Winchester’s programme leader for the MA Writing for Children course.
She said: “The competition is a wonderful way to support and encourage young writers to experiment with poetry. The winning entries are polished pieces, highly original in both language and approach.
“Attendees came from all over the UK and around the world to share ideas and creative work, and the beautiful weather meant people could congregate and listen to readings outside. I’ve also been told that several new writers have been offered representation by the literary agents they met here.”
