IT was a glorious day to gather for a Hampshire village church fayre.

Old and new faces gathered together for the Owslebury village fayre on Saturday (June 21) at the glebe field to raise money for St Andrew’s Church.

There were tombolas, a raffle, and a spot of cream tea served under the welcomed shade of the gazibos.

Organiser Barbara Crabbe said, while not as many people attended this year, the whole village got involved.

“It went very well,” she said. “A lot of people were away so it wasn’t as busy as it has been. Last year was a record with the number of people we had but we still managed to raise about £2,000 for the church. It all helps considerably, with things such as the quota.

“The highlight, for me, was the small ceremony for the memorial garden. The children were splashing in the paddling pool and it was such a glorious day.

“It’s the one time of the year when everyone is together at the church so they see people who they haven’t seen in a while. It’s a great time because they do come out and sit outside. Some of the newer villagers were running stalls for us, which was nice, because we don’t have commercial people come in. Lots of people donated in other ways too, so everyone donated a bottle or two and it was a whole village effort.”

There was also an exhibit at the village hall, commemorating the village’s war effort, with a collection of pictures and hand-written stories. A reef was later laid at the site of the new memorial at a special ceremony.
