WINCHESTER University has taken part in a campaign aimed at helping young carers in higher education.

The University held a series of workshops in a bid to promote Carers’ Week, run by the Carers Trust.

The charity aims to provide support to students and ran the specialist awareness week up until Sunday (June 15).

Dr Terri Sandison, director of lifelong learning and staff development, said: “There are thousands of young people caring for family members, including parents and siblings, and this can be a challenge for them when it comes to education.

“Our aim is to support young carers into, and through, their higher education with us at the University and ensure they are getting whatever help they need to manage the emotional and academic demands they face.”

The university has been involved in a number of young carer projects in partnership with Hampshire County Council, The Children’s Society, Carers Trust and Hampshire Young Carers Alliance.

Winchester has seven Higher Education Ambassadors, who are are also young adult carers, supporting the outreach work of the University by visiting local young carer projects. There is also a designated Student Adviser who supports them with any education or welfare needs.

On Thursday (July 3) Terri Sandison joins criminology student and carer Fiona Benton at 1pm for a live two-hour webchat, offering advice and guidance to young carers on going to university. For more information visit matter.carers.org/.
