LEMON and sugar, strawberries and chocolate – whatever you have with yours students from Eastleigh College were sure to accommodate.

This Shrove Tuesday (March 4) saw students team up with a Winchester woman to help raise £188 for a heart muscle charity.

The Pancake Party, which was part of the Cardiomyopathy Association’s first ever national fundraiser, saw 60 pancakes sold at the Red Carpet Restaurant on the main campus on Chesnut Avenue, and organisers say it was a big success.

Jo Macklin, Marketing Project Coordinator at Eastleigh College, said: “It went really well and we had a lot of people through the door. I know the students enjoyed it.”

Anne Slaughter, 72, of Harestock near Winchester, was diagnosed with cardiomyopathy in 2012, and said it’s important for people to be educated about the lesser known condition.

The retired neo-natal paediatric nurse said: “I really wanted to play my part in helping the CMA with this campaign. I want to support the education of doctors and nurses so that cardiomyopathy is diagnosed more quickly.

“Often there isn’t enough support for people with this condition and they are not told about all the services the CMA has to help affected families.”

The hereditary disease affects people of all ages, including babies, and is the biggest medical cause of sudden death in the under 35’s.
