POLICE have named a couple who died when their car crashed near Winchester on Monday.

Barry Janes, 70 and his wife Shirley, 69, from Fareham, were in their red Ford Fusion car travelling south on the A34 at Three Maids Hill when it left the carriageway and ended up on its roof at around 6.30pm.

Police say they have yet to establish what caused the vehicle to leave the road. A post-mortem has been conducted and an inquest was due to open.

Tributes to the couple have been paid by family members.

In a joint statement, they said: “We are shocked and devastated to have lost our mum and dad, nanny and grandad in this way, who meant so much to us all as a family. We feel so lucky to have shared our life with them and they will be sorely missed.”

Police are still very keen to speak to anyone who witnessed the incident that happened at 6.38pm on Monday, to help them build a clear picture of what happened.

Anyone who witnessed the collision is urged to contact PC Matthew Clayton at Whitchurch Roads Policing Unit on 101 quoting Operation Agate.
