FORECASTERS are predicting heavy downpours and the possibility of hail and thunder across Winchester overnight as the severe weather continues to batter Hampshire.

More warnings were issued to drivers today after several roads flooded across the region, and travel chaos has continued with train delays mostly affecting the South West Trains network.

Water Lane and The Weirs in Winchester have both showed signs of possible flooding this afternoon, with water spilling over in to the roads, but not causing any major disruption.

Hampshire County Council highway teams have been working throughout the day to clear flooded roads - such as the A3090 in the Test Valley.

Across the county flooding has caused disruption to those back to work after the Christmas holidays, with major disruptions in the Fareham and Romsey areas.

The wet weather is expected to continue through Tuesday with some sunshine breaking through into Wednesday.

Since December 18 up to 250mm has fallen across Hampshire, the equivalent of three months rainfall in just three weeks. As the ground is so saturated, more trees are expected to fall in winds gusting up to 50mph inland and 60mph on the coast tonight and into tomorrow.

Extra arboriculture teams with chainsaws are currently working and on standby in the event of more trees coming down. As a result no roads, priority routes or otherwise, are known to be blocked by fallen trees/branches at this time.
