A WHITE elephant office block in Winchester which has stood empty for years is set to be re-let.

City councillors on the Cabinet went into secret session to discuss Avalon House, the offices on Chesil Street which were vacated by the planning department some five years ago.

The building has stood empty gathering dust and plans later fell through for the outpatients department at the Royal Hampshire County Hospital to relocate there.

The council has budgeted a six-figure sum to renovate the 1980s building.

A report to cabinet said the building has been re-let subject to contract. Further details are currently confidential, said a city council spokeswoman.

Some £750,000 was earmarked this year and £1m including the cost of fitting out in 2014-15.

Other major expenditure this year is £995,000 on renovating Abbey Mill before it is taken over by the River Cottage organisation.

Some £12m has been set aside in 2013-15 on Silver Hill, with £5m going on the compulsory purchase orders.
