SCHOOL children from Hampshire were given a day off from traditional schooling last week when they attended a food-inspired workshop.

Students from Kings’, Westgate, Henry Beaufort, Test Valley and Testwood secondary schools came together to learn about art and food at a specialist day trip which took them across Winchester.

The day started with a tour of Winchester’s historic City Mill where they watched the wheat grain being milled into flour.

Then it was onto Union Jacks Restaurant in the High Street where restaurant manager Ben Truman talked about the history of the restaurant and its two founders, Chris Bianco and Jamie Oliver.

Here the pupils were treated to a tasting session of local cheeses and fresh herbs, learning about their origin. This was then followed by a lesson in flat bread making with Union Jacks’s chefs.

The final session of the day was at The Colour Factory with artists Rachael Alexander and Jenny Muncaster. After a tour of the artists’ studios and gallery the pupils made their own food-inspired working clocks.

The finished clocks were exhibited at Union Jacks Restaurant last Wednesday (November 27) which saw the pupils show off their creations to families and friends.
