Worthys Festival kicks off in style
12:00pm Monday 23rd September 2013 in News
A HAMPSHIRE village festival kicked off in style last weekend.
The 2013 Worthys Festival began with a church fete on Saturday in Kings Worthy, near Winchester.
Hundreds of people turned out at St Mary’s Church green despite grey skies to enjoy a variety of stalls and entertainment, including performances by the Hook Eagle Morris Men and modern dance by Dance Up.
Events continue throughout the week including a village quiz, history exhibitions, coffee mornings and a finale on Sunday, September 29 featuring a dog show, football tournament and fireworks.
Jane Rutter, chairman of the festival steering group and city council ward member for Kings Worthy, said: “It’s a huge relief to get here after all the planning and I think we are going to have a fabulous week.
“There’s a huge buzz around the villages as there really is something for everyone at the festival.”
Rev Alan Gordon, Kings Worthy rector, added he was happy the church and festival could combine.
He said: “We usually hold this fundraiser in May but it made sense to team up with the festival. Paul Young and his team have done a great job organising it and everyone has worked so hard.”
It is the second time the biannual event has taken place and focuses on the villages of Kings Worthy, Headbourne Worthy and Abbots Worthy.
