Winchester soldiers host reception and sunset ceremony
12:00am Sunday 15th September 2013 in News
HAMPSHIRE soldiers have hosted a reception and sunset ceremony.
Dame Mary Fagan, the Lord Lieutenant of Hampshire, the Mayor and Mayoress of Winchester, Cllr Ernie Jeffs and Mrs Barbara Jeffs, and Hampshire County Council chairman, Cllr Ken Thornber, attended the event at Worthy Down, near Winchester.
Hosted by the commander of Winchester Garrison, Brigadier Allan McLeod, it was an opportunity to meet officers and staff from the garrison, and organisers intended it to underline the Armed Forces Covenants.
Guests on the evening of September 4 were entertained by the Central Band of the Royal Air Force.
Brigadier McLeod spoke of an “exciting future” for the Winchester Garrison.
Slated to run between 2014 and 2018, the redevelopment of Worthy Down into a new £270m defence training centre will be a huge boost to Hampshire's economy.
In becoming a major new college for the Army, Royal Navy and Royal Air Force, it will more than double the number of personnel there from 750 to 2,000.
