Ten families evacuated from Winchester street as fire causes partial collapse of house
8:50am Thursday 22nd August 2013 in News
TEN FAMILIES have been evacuated from their homes in the early hours of this morning after a blaze ripped through a house in Winchester.
The two-story property on Hatherley Road, which was under construction at the time, was engulfed in flames as a total of 40 firefighters battled for three hours.
Crew manager Phil Foxton, of Winchester Fire Station, said: “Parts of the building have collapsed – the front has seen a partial collapse.”
The fire, which started just before 4.30am, was contained to the building thanks to the hard work of crews from across Hampshire and ten neighbouring properties were evacuated.
Crews from Winchester, St Mary's, Redbridge, Eastleigh and Basingstoke were all been at the scene but the cause of the fire is not yet known.
With the fire under control, an investigation will get underway later this morning and the road will remain closed for some time.
