City Councillors urge county to do more to keep pavements clear of ice
5:21pm Friday 22nd March 2013 in Winchester
CITY councillors have urged the county council to do more to keep pavements clear of ice and snow.
Winchester Town Forum heard that gritting and salting is the responsibility of the county's highways manager, Peter Eade.
Mr Eade was was asked why key paths into the city were not gritted during the last snowfall.
“We don't carry specialist equipment to clear footways because we would use it for only one or two weeks per year and that's not economic.
“Generally we salt roads only and about a third of the roads might well be done on a regular basis.”
Councillor Ian Tait said: “I think the county does a very good job. However, is there an opportunity for us to help prioritise particular pavements?”
Mr Eade said that whilst some pavements were gritted, roads would remain the priority.
