Winchester schoolchildren get hands-on lesson at City Mill
4:00pm Saturday 23rd February 2013 in Winchester By Joseph Curtis
Children learn to bake bread at the mill.
FOR most children half-term is a chance to take a break from learning.
But several children enjoyed a hands-on lesson in bread baking at Winchester City Mill last Wednesday (Feb 20).
Miller Robert Goodwin showed the children how the mill works and each step involved in the bread-making process.
It is a rare example of a working urban corn mill, powered by the fast-flowing River Itchen.
The mill has been on site since 1743, where it remained in use until the early 20th Century.
It was then taken over by The National Trust and resumed grinding flower in March 2004.
Last year it attracted more than 40,000 visitors with the mill crediting the boom to TV-inspired home baking and interest in local food.
