New Forest Lapland attracts over 1,000 complaints from angry families

ORGANISERS of the Lapland New Forest Christmas theme park were today under investigation after more than 1,300 people complained about the controversial attraction.

The surge of anger from visitors who feel they were ripped off has been described as unprecedented by trading standards officers who have visited the site near Ringwood and are studying promotional literature to see if any rules have been broken.

Animal welfare experts at the RSPCA have also launched an inquiry after receiving more than a dozen complaints about the treatment of animals at the park.

Hundreds complained after paying £30-a-head or £100 for a family of four to visit the Lapland village at the weekend.

The attraction, in Matchams Leisure Park, is due to open every day until December 24 and is thought to have already taken more than £1m in pre-booked tickets.

But last night those behind the theme park were keeping a low profile. Telephones remained unanswered and the company’s website and email addresses were out of action.

Earlier in the day Henry Mears, the event’s advertising chief, had defended the park.

“They have come in to spend four to five hours there and if they arrive at 12pm then they get to see the lights take their full effect when it gets dark,” he said.

“After the weekend it’s quite obvious that people want to see Father Christmas so we will be opening more grottos.

“We’ve had plenty of messages from people who have enjoyed it.”

After revealing the problems yesterday, the Daily Echo was overwhelmed with calls and emails from across the country from people who had travelled hundreds of miles and spent hundreds of pounds to visit the park which boasted a “breathtaking” tunnel of light leading to a “winter wonderland” with “snow-covered log cabins” surrounding an ice rink, nativity scene, and a Christmas market.

But visitors said they were met with sheds which looked like they were from B&Q, fairy lights and snow on trees and a picture pinned up on a wooden frame at the end of a muddy wasteland.

Instead of seasonal food, a circle of expensive burger vans offered refreshments and the only attraction that families did not have to pay for was the gingerbread-making factory.

Farcical scenes saw “elves”

involved in scuffles with furious parents in a “gingerbread house” and Father Christmas punched in his grotto, according to angry customers who are now demanding their money back.

One parent complained her children even stumbled across “Santa” during a smoking break at the back of his grotto.

Trading standards manager Ivan Hancock told the Daily Echo: “I’ve never known anything to spark so many complaints in 20 years working with three different authorities.

In the South East region alone 1,300 people contacted us.

“I’ve heard of someone spending £3,000 on tickets and terrible stories of real human misery like a terminally ill grandparent taking all their grandchildren to the park.

“They were selling dreams on their website but the picture portrayed fell a long way short of the real experience.”

A Hampshire recruitment agency which supplied 20 members of staff to the park withdrew all their employees following a number of attacks on staff by furious customers.

Adrian Wood quit the park after being punched in the head and called “a pikey”.

He said: “People were complaining before they even got in. How there weren’t riots, I have no idea.”

Another agency worker who asked not to be named said: “We asked Henry (Mears) what to do if anyone asked to speak to the manager if they were unhappy.

“He told us to point them in any direction and look out for the guy with curly hair – but he doesn’t have curly hair.

“He then said if they carried on to pretend we had a phone call or had to go to the toilet and just walk away.”

Julie Noble from Hythe, who took her three children to the park, said: “It was souldestroying.

It was filthy with mud everywhere and nothing was under cover. The seasonal food described on the websites was in fact just a circle of burger vans and there were no Christmas markets.

“There wasn’t even any organisation or someone to take the tickets we had paid £125 for. It felt like hell on earth by the end of the day.”

Grace Tyrrel, from Fareham, whose six-year-old daughter Jessica queued for three hours to meet Father Christmas, added: “It was a mudbath. Like all the other visitors, we are completely disgusted, especially given the wasted £150 spent by us at this time of year.”

Diana Porter, from Totton, spent £350 taking her family which included her daughter Anita Saunders and five-yearold grandson Alfie.

Anita said: “My five-year-old son Alfie was looking forward to seeing Father Christmas and the reindeer. When we got there, there were two of them that you could hardly see and he just turned around to me and said: ‘Mummy are they dead?”

“They were lying down in a shed and didn’t look very healthy.”

Ironically, Lapland New Forest’s website, which was last night no longer working, claimed it offered value for money.

“We believe you’ll agree that the experience could be priced higher,” it said.

“We are especially proud to be constructing a truly magical and affordable event that will not only employ many people, but will help warm thousands of young and grown-up visitors’ hearts.”

Staff under attack

SUE Holzharr, managing director of Richards Events in New Milton, said it had been forced to withdraw more than 20 members of staff from the park over fears for their safety.

“It wasn’t the attraction we were made to believe it would be,” she said.

Mrs Holzharr said members of staff were left to face the brunt of visitors’ anger.

“One of my girls, who is the nicest sweetest person, got slapped. I felt really guilty but at the end of the day I had to put my staff first.”

Sadly Paul B is just that - sad. However, with the Lapland in the New Forest, my family went up North especially to see one of these makeshift efforts and it is just another rip off which some fairground traders do. Unless one goes to a show with a good name or personality known to us, then don't bother to go.

I just want to say thankyou for publicising this, I am stunned by the level of coverage this has received. Who would've thought that my facebook groups' photos and comments would gain coverage on the national news and press. I started a facebook group on Saturday evening after returning from what should have been a magical experience, and turned out to be a nightmare, with my daughter and I devastated. Thanks for helping to prevent others from having to go through the same misery, and for hopefully giving us added amunition in the fight to get back our hard earned money. Thanks again,
Emma

I also visited this shambles, and spend over £100 to go there. We waited for 3 hours to see santa, only to see a man in a red costume, minus beard and hat, coughing and spluttering having a swift fag behind a shed!
We were told we had to get into the spirit of christmas while we were waiting by the 'elf'- a spotty youth who spent most of the time swearing to another 'elf'.
It was a total nightmare, and should be shut down now.

Myself and my partner along with his family and the kids went to lapland in the new forest we were all very excited in the lead up to this but onarrival after paying over £160 to gain entrance, we were totally gutted. The tunnel of light was a walkway in the woods it was terrible. It ruined what we thought would be a good day and hopefully we will geta full refund now. I am glad this has had so much publicity as it shows what kind of con merchants are out there and hopefully stop this from happening again. lets hope they do not get away with it and go on to do this again next year !!!

I went on Saturday 29 November 2008, what a dissapointment me and my mum took my 4 year old godson who had been so excited about going to 'father christmas land' all week. after looking at the website i had told him it was going to be covered inb snow and we were going to a small part of where father christmas lives, what a lie! As we walked in my godson spotted the snow machine that they hadn't even bothered to cover up and hide my godson said 'this isn't real snow thats a snow machine'! they could of atleast hid it! what could i say to a 4 year old boy to make it better? the tunnel of light was a joke not what you had imagined from the website once inside the park it just got worse, it was frezzing cold with no shelter as my godson was getting blue lips we decided to take him to get some lunch and warm up, again what a shambles it cost me £21 for burger and chips then he tried to charge me more, the food was cold and not very apatising! the marquee where there was picnic tables but no heaters to warm up the place, i had to take my coat off to warm my godson up. we qued for 3 hours to see santa all for 5 minutes or less, then no presant was given by santa himself just a little presant like decaration to take to a b&Q shed to choose a presant that wasn't even wrapped and all the toys were out of date, he choose a racing car and when we opened it for him batteries wasn't included and it broke befoe he even played with it. i honestly think i could of got a better presant if i took him to a shopping centre and thats free! we had photos taken with santa but no one told us we had to pay £15 for 2 photos and wait nearly an hour for them. everyone was complaining and children were crying. there was bno christmas marketnot that we could find anyway and the ice rink was closed! i wasn't impressed to find out that rides on the fun fair were an extra £2-£3 per ride i couldn't let my godson on these as i couldn't limit him to one ride as i would of had to go with him and i din't have that sort of money on me as i didn't think i was going to be ripped off. ther was no elf to meet us by the car like it sadi on the websie we had to walk over a large car park and when we returned in the evening it wasn't lit up and it took ages to find my car as i couldn't see where i was going as it was on different uneven levels this is highly dangerous and unsuitable for the less mobile and very very dangerous i wonder how many acidents happened? this was supposed to be a great start to christmas and to get in the christmas spirit now after spendin £90 that thye said would be value for money i am upset and very angrey and the fact that my godson is upset and that i've been ripped off

If Trading Standards can't shut this place down, who can?

Get the Police in now and shut their bank accounts. Over £1m is moving in to offshore bank accounts as we speak.

Someone, do something NOW!

I have contacted consumer advise today, who told me to try my bank for a chargeback. they passed me on to the fraud department no go. they say its not fraud but just misleading information. so I am stuck with four tickets for the 22nd of december costing £100.00.
I am fuming surely there should be some sort of protection against this sort of rip off.
My family have twenty days of torture before engaging this hardship.
merry xmas to all sufferers....

Having just returned from Valkenburg in Holland where they really know how to set something up like this, I really feel sorry for anyone who has paid a lot of money just to be disappointed.
What is it with this country that we can't do a simple thing like set up a Christmas grotto?
Valkenburg had markets, a parade and everywhere was decorated with lights, figures and other decorations.
No wonder people choose to go abroad for this type of thing!

where are the young vandals when you need them? They need to come and smash this place to the ground so that they have no choice but to cancel it.

Looking at the reactions from the Organizers for this so-called Theme Park I really doubt they will refund people and I would bet they will go bust and Trading as a Limited Company only being Registered in August offers little hope for Refunds that could run into the £1,000s

I visited Lapland in the New forest with my parents, wife and 4 yr old Daughter on Sunday. we arrived at 3.30 in the afternoon and due to the weather it was quite dark for that time of day,we entered the tunnel of light which in the fading light was starting to come to life, we looked around the the various animal enclosures, made use of the various activities in the swiss style cabins, such as picture drawing, writing a wish list to Santa and decorating gingerbread men, we then visited santa where we qued for approx 15-20 minutes. we then went to the Girls toy store where our little girl was able to choose 5 toys. after this we ventured to the catering area and had something to eat, by the time we had done all of this we decided to walk back through the tunnel of light of which by this time (approx 7pm) was fantastic. further we went to the ice skating rink where we all had further fun for another hour or so. ok I am not totally blind or nieve to the comments made by people who didnt find the experiance enjoyable.
yes the tunnel of light was a walkway in the trees if you went in broad daylight, yes the snow wasnt inch deep, yes the event catering was expensive (but isnt that just event catering) maybe the toys could have been better, and maybe the ice rink could have been a little less bumpy, but through the eyes of my 4yr old daughter it was magical. and whist watching the bad press on the local news this evening she asked the question why didnt those people like Lapland daddy?

I am absolutley disgusted that Mr Mears thinks he can con people like this. I have booked 5 tickets for my family to visit this shambles on Christmas eve. I am only grateful that i never had to experience the not so Lapland for myself. I think this would of caused upset for my children and family. I am wondering whether Mr Mears feels any guilt, knowing that he has ripped off so many families. Lets see if Mr Mears is able to improve this event as he says for everyone to enjoy. Im not going to hold my breath.
