Plans to break up Romsey parliamentary seat scrapped

Plans to dismantle the Romsey and Southampton North parliamentary constituency have been abandoned in the latest proposals published by the Boundary Commission this week.

After recommending last year that the constituency be broken up and shared out amongst its neighbours, the commission now says it should remain largely the same, apart from the loss of the Blackwater ward to New Forest East and parts of Swaythling to Southampton Test.

Romsey and Southampton North constituency would see the addition of Hiltingbury and Chandler’s Ford, currently part of the Eastleigh seat.

Just a small, but significant, fact which is not conveyed here nor in the full story in the paper itself is that the seat will now be "ROMSEY".

No "Romsey & etc.etc." - just plain simple straightforward - ROMSEY.

Let's hope the Lib Dems in the Coalition accept it and vote it through, even though it is more along the lines of the Labour suggestions than any others. Maybe Labour will help see it through - who knows?

These are the "latest proposals".If they are the "last word" will our current MP have to find a new home in "Romsey Constituency"if she wishes to be considered for beyond 2015??

The local torys could be stuck with a useless MP Nokes for another five years that will suit the labour party who dont have any chance in the constituency anyway.

Now I'm confused. Is this the same Peter Sowerby who claimed that he got Mrs Gidley elected by leading the tactical voting through the "norties"?

As has been noted, if the "local" card is to be played again Mrs Nokes could be in for another house move if she thinks Romsey still wants her. Alternatively, despite what she's said previously she may want to have a crack at New Forest East, which she will be entitled to apply to their membership to contest for selection if the Lib Dems do vote for change (or even if they don't).

The Tories have already been told to select their candidates on the current boundaries as soon as the P&CC election's over, so maybe we'll get an indication sooner rather than later.

And maybe we won't! Don't be so negative Peter. Anything can (and does) happen in politics nowadays.
