Group forms to support Tesco

Residents have set up a group backing controversial plans to build a supermarket on the Broadlands Estate on the edge of Romsey.

STAR (Supporting Tesco At Romsey) launched this week with the message that the superstore could help breathe new life into the town centre.

“We are Romsey people who love our town and want to see it thrive and prosper. Something major has to happen to start bringing people back into Romsey. We believe that a new Tesco store is a great start,” said STAR co-ordinator Donna Lambe.

How silly. Tesco are big enough to fight their own battles.

Personally I don't like Tesco but I have no objection to them moving in to Romsey. I disagree with the proposed location, which contrary to Lambs I think will do nothing to bring more people in to the town and will damage existing business.

This battle is not for tescos its for Romsey. It doesnt matter whether it is Tesco, Asda or any of the major supermarkets the point is Kaipaith is that whether people like it or not Romsey needs this.
To many people are shopping out of Romsey and not giving the town a second look so all the revenue is passing it by and im not surprised the lack of choice in Romsey is terrible.Business will not be hurt it is my belief that Tesco will promote the town from the store which will bring more revenue to Romsey

As a new resident in romsey i will be delighted to see a tesco store arrive, i and many others simply afford the prices charged by waitrose and the local independent stores, and the range offered by aldi is not adequate. This means that my wife and i are currently doing the bulk of our shopping at asda in chandlers ford. We are both food lovers and have purchased items at several of the excellent shops in the town centre since moving to the area, but cannot justify the cost for our big weekly shops! In my opinion tesco will not put traders in the town out of business, since the people most likely to shop there would not be using them anyway (due to the cost!) whilst those who are regular shoppers including those who shop at waitrose, are unlikely to be tempted into tesco (especially if they are a RAT!)
My wife and i both love the town centre in romsey, however it doesn't change the fact that we need to be careful with our money, we would most certainly be queing at tesco's door if they open here, and also buying in town when we can. If you can afford not to go to tesco then don't, just don't try to block others who would appreciate the savings and convenience!
