The man who died following a tragic paragliding accident yesterday afternoon (Sunday) has been named as 42-year-old Steve John of Milford Haven.

Mr John, who was a father of two, died whilst paragliding off cliffs at Newgale beach at around 1.30pm. He was airlifted to Withybush Hospital but later died of his injuries.

Nick Bamber, Chief Flying Instructor for Pembrokeshire Paragliding said: "Steve John was a top bloke and a good friend who will be sorely missed by the whole paragliding community.

"I feel Steve was very unlucky and that he will be deeply missed. We want him to be well remembered and our thoughts go out to his family."

One eyewitness, Bob Penberthy from the Rhondda Valley, said he thought Mr John was aiming for the beach as he was flying so low.

Mr Penberthy, who owns a holiday caravan in Newgale, said: "There was a tremendous noise when he made impact with the cliff.

“One person tried to climb up to help the man, but he couldn’t be reached. People were calling up to the man to stay still, and try to unclip his harness, but I don’t think he was conscious."

Coastguards received an emergency call about the accident at 1.30pm.

A 169 RAF Rescue helicopter happened to be on exercise in the Angle area, taking only five minutes to reach the scene.

Broad Haven Coastguard resue team, Little Haven RNLI inshore lifeboat and the Newgale beach RNLI lifeguards also attended the incident.

Any witnesses to the accident are asked to contact Haverfordwest Police Station on 101.
