A SCHEME to encourage more people to visit Romsey shops and tourist attractions is about to be launched.
“Visit Romsey” is a joint initiative between the town council, Romsey Abbey and King John’s House.
Visit Romsey brochures will be available in all Tourism South-East offices and a new website, <&bh"http://www.visitromsey.co.uk">www. visitromsey.co.uk<&eh>, is being launched.
It’s planned to distribute 100,000 leaflets throughout the region in a bid to attract more people into the town.
King John’s House manager, Anne James, said: “Visit Romsey has been set up because we want to draw more people to see the riches that this town has to offer as well as spend time eating and shopping here.” The town’s Norman abbey is often described as the “jewel in Romsey’s crown” and the vicar, the Rev Tim Sledge, said: “Romsey is a wonderful place, but many people outside of the town just don’t know that. It’s a very well kept secret!”
Mr Sledge added: “What has been so encouraging is the financial and practical support we have been given by a number of organisations, including Romsey Town Council, Test Valley BC, Romsey Town Centre Management and Romsey and District Society.
“It just goes to show what can happen when different community groups come together for the good of the town.”
“I am delighted to back this project. It has been needed for some years now and it’s good to see different groups in the town working together in bringing this project about.”
Romsey’s mayor, John Ray is launching the initiative on Saturday, March 27, at the town hall.
“Romsey is a great town and we need more people to know that by coming here and realising that it is indeed, the jewel of Hampshire,” he added.
