THE RESTORATION work at a Hampshire nature reserve has begun.

A group of 13 volunteers from Hampshire and Isle of Wight wildlife trust have met for the first time to mark the start of the project to restore Fishlake Meadows in Romsey.

The volunteers spent the day tackling the scrub at the reserve.

If left unchecked, the scrub would take over large areas of reed bed, and crowd out the open habitats that make the reserve a wildlife haven for so many species.

Scrub management is a key part of the work to improve the site for wildlife, which the trust plans to carry out on behalf of Test Valley Borough Council.

Roger Sambrook, wildlife trust volunteer said: "It was good to experience first-hand what the wildlife trust is doing and has already done to enhance what a magnificent asset on our doorstep.

"It is also reassuring to know the future of the reserve is in good hands under the manager of the trust."

Fishlake Meadows has been the scene of spectacular murmurations of starlings throughout January, with thousands of birds taking part in the stunning shows.

Hundreds of photographers and bird watchers have been flocking to the meadows to get a glimpse of the murmurations.

Jo Armson, wildlife trust reserves officer said: "The volunteers made short work of the first patch and really enjoyed making a dead hedge with the cut material.

"Throughout the work party it was lovely to hear all the volunteers chatting away, getting to know each other, and showing great teamwork."

Two more work parties are arranged for this winter, with an evening meeting for people to discover the other volunteering opportunities.
