A HAMPSHIRE man captured the stunning moment thousands of starlings performed a stunning aerial display.

The murmuration was filmed by photographer Roy Venkatesh on Sunday in Winnall and footage shows thousands of birds soaring through the sky.

The phenomenon happens in winter months and there are a number of theories as to why it happens, including suggestions that it keeps the birds warm and makes them less vulnerable to attacks from other animals.

Mr Venkatesh said: "This one started at about 4.45pm and went on for about half an hour yesterday.

"It gets better - it will change from day to day according to the sunset times and the light levels.

"I am retired and live in Basingstoke, so made the trip down yesterday to witness this mesmerising spectacle."
