AN ELDERLY woman had to receive medical treatment when a fire broke out at a residential care home in a Hampshire town.

Firefighters were called to Bridge Road, Romsey at about 9.10pm last night after the fire broke out in a kitchen at Abbey Lodge Churchill Retirement Home.

Crews from Romsey Fire Station had to put out the fire which started with a microwave oven in the kitchen.

An 81-year old woman had to receive treatment from South Central Ambulance Service at the scene for smoke inhalation injuries.

It is not believed that she was taken to hospital.

A spokesman from Hampshire Fire and rescue Service said the crews were there for about 50 minutes putting out the fire and making the home safe.

There was smoke logging in the kitchen and in the communal hallway.

No one else was injured.
