Romsey man Garry Webb still lives just a stone’s throw from the site of his VE Day street party.

The celebration on May 8, 1945 was held in courtyard of the White Horse Hotel, just yards from his Latimer Street home.

His mother Winifred is in the picture but his dad is absent – Garry thinks he was working in the shop at the time.

The shop is now the Atherley dry cleaners but Garry, 80, still lives above the premises.

The party took place just across the road, close to the rear of Pearce’s bakery – in recent years the site has been developed for housing.

Garry is still in regular contact with one of the other boys in the picture, David Brooks, and believes many of the children gathered around the table on that day in June 1945 still live in the area.

With the aid of Charles Burnett of Romsey Local History Society (LTVAS) he has produced this annotated photo with all the names he can remember.

Garry would like to hear from anyone in the picture who would be interested in getting together for a VE day reunion and anyone who can put a name to a face. He can be contacted on 01794 512689 or email g_webb3@btinternet.com
