The victim of a fatal road accident has been described as a “gentle giant with a big heart” by his family.

Patrick Duffy, of Southampton Road, Bartley, died after he was struck by a car on Easter Sunday night.

The 61-year-old was hit by a Ford Focus while walking across the A336 Ringwood Road, near Carlton House, in Netley Marsh.

He sustained multiple injuries and was taken to Southampton General Hospital, where he later died.

In a statement released through police, his family said: “Words cannot describe how devastated we all are. He was a loving husband, father, brother and son.

“He was very well known and a great friend to many. He was a gentle giant with a big heart. We will miss him so much.”

Residents in the area spoke of their shock and told of seeing five police cars and three ambulances at the scene of the incident, which happened at around 10.30pm.

The driver of the Ford Focus was unhurt and not arrested by police.

An investigation into the cause of the incident was launched, and the emergency services were at the scene for around an hour and a half.
